An hourly payroll calculator estimates gross pay (pay before taxes and deductions) based on hours worked and an hourly rate. It helps hourly workers verify their paychecks, helps managers estimate payroll costs and helps freelancers and contractors quote project rates.
How to Calculate Gross Pay
Gross pay is calculated by multiplying regular hours by the regular hourly rate, then adding overtime pay. Regular pay = regular hours × hourly rate. Overtime pay = overtime hours × (hourly rate × 1.5). Total gross pay = regular pay + overtime pay. Note: gross pay does not include tax deductions.
Gross Pay vs Net Pay
Gross pay is your total earnings before any deductions. Net pay (take-home pay) is what you receive after federal income tax, state income tax, Social Security, Medicare and any other deductions are withheld. This calculator only estimates gross pay — consult a tax professional for net pay calculations.
What Affects My Hourly Pay?
Your gross pay is affected by: your regular hourly rate, total hours worked, overtime hours, overtime multiplier (usually 1.5x), double time hours (if applicable) and your pay period (weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly or monthly). Taxes, benefits and deductions reduce your net pay further.
Payroll Calculator for Small Businesses
Small business owners can use a payroll calculator to estimate labor costs before processing payroll. Knowing your total payroll expense — including overtime — helps with budgeting, cash flow planning and compliance with minimum wage and overtime laws.
