A time duration calculator measures the elapsed time between a start time and end time, returning the result in hours, minutes and seconds (or decimal hours). It is used in payroll, billing, project management, sports timing and medical settings.
How to Calculate Time Duration
To find the duration between two times: convert both to a 24-hour format, subtract the start time from the end time, and convert back to hours and minutes. For example: 2:45 PM (14:45) minus 9:15 AM (09:15) = 5 hours 30 minutes = 5.5 decimal hours.
Calculating Duration Across Midnight
When a time period crosses midnight, add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting. Example: shift starts at 11:00 PM (23:00) and ends at 7:00 AM (07:00). Add 24: 07:00 + 24:00 = 31:00. Then: 31:00 - 23:00 = 8 hours duration.
Time Duration for Billing
Freelancers, consultants and attorneys often bill by the hour and need precise time duration tracking. Converting duration to decimal hours (e.g., 1:45 = 1.75 hours) makes billing calculations straightforward. Many billing tools accept decimal hours directly.
